Welcome to the Women’s Sport Collective Coaching Hub
We’re thrilled to have you in the group and can’t wait to get to know you better. I hope you don’t mind me taking up a little of your time so you can get to know us – Women in Sport – better too.
Women in Sport (WiS), founded in 1984, is the longest standing charity advocating for the rights of women and girls in sport. Our sector leading insight and advocacy work covers all stages of a woman’s life and all the different ways she might be involved in sport – from grassroots to podium; as a player, a coach, an official or a leader in the boardroom.
Through our research, we have called out the prevalence of gender stereotyping during the primary years, explored the heartbreaking impact of puberty on teenage girls, uncovered the pressures on midlife women and discovered the health inequalities of women in ‘wiser’. We have outlined solutions through our Big Sister programme and our #TimeTogether campaign, worked with government to influence public policy and have collaborated with the biggest names in sport - like Nike, Vitality and Metrobank.
Our vision is that no one is excluded from the joy, fulfilment and lifelong benefits of sport. We all know that sport can’t happen without great coaches - and great coaching can’t happen without more women involved!
And we all know there aren’t enough female coaches anywhere in sport; that when sport has tried to change this their approach so far hasn't worked or has too often fallen back on ‘fixing the women’. We know – and you know better than anyone – that the problem isn’t the women, it’s the system.
Coaching is a unique role with a specialised skillset. But we know the issues female coaches face stem from the wider reality of sport, wherever women and girls are trying to be involved. They relate to the inferior status that women in sport and women’s sport is still seen to have. Often upheld by poor culture and policies.
We’ll be sharing more about the work WiS is doing in collaboration with our partner organisations from across the sector over the coming months.
In the meantime, if you have any questions please reach out to me. Ciara@womeninsport.org
I’ll be introducing myself on the what’s app group too.
